HOW TO GET AN ALLOTMENT

To get an allotment you will need to contact your local council who will be able to tell you where the various allotment sites are in your area and also the contact details of the person responsible for letting the allotments. You will probably find that you will have to go onto a waiting list as in recent times allotments have become very popular, with the desire for growing your own fruit and vegetables without the use of numerous chemicals, being able to spend time in a quiet and stress free enviroment, attracting more and more people to getting an allotment.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

When choosing an allotment there are a few things to take into consideration, first of all is the site close to home, has the site got good security or does it it suffer from vandalism, if you have a choice of plots has the one you are interested in been cultivated recently or not, does it have a shed, is there a water supply close to it, if the plot is overgrown is it littered with rubbish, is it covered with perennial weeds or problem weeds such as Marestail, Bindweed, Brambles,Docks or Dandelions, is there a problem with Clubroot on the plot, try to have a chat with the neighbouring plot holders, is there a site shop, seed scheme, is it run by the council or it's own committee. If there is a problem with rubbish on the plot is there any help available to remove the rubbish, does the site have any deliveries of manure, leafmould or grass cuttings, all of which are excellent for making compost with for improving your soil quality.
